There is a new dimension to the great Indian political drama. Move over politics of caste and religion, here comes the politics of region. The ‘hate Bihari campaign’ is out in the open again. But there is much more to it than meets the eye.
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray, New Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit and Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh have all shown their narrow and divisive politics to gain political dividend.
Democracy no doubt has been the best thing to happen to India. But there is a flip side to it too. And that is vote bank politics. ‘Hate Bihari campaign’ is nothing but a by-product of such politics.
We Indians miss no opportunity in crying racism and the hate attacks against Indians is a huge turn-on to the otherwise indifferent Indians. Just a casual look around would be enough to discourage us from pointing fingers to others.
Indians in general lack civic sense and this is like stating the obvious. But still New Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit singled out Biharis for mucking up the national capital. Well, Sheilaji it’s no just about Biharis. Every other Indian is lax about public cleanliness. Being the Chief Minister of the national capital, at least mind your words. This is the least that one can expect.
Raj Thackeray, the self-proclaimed champion of Marathi rights, spewed venom against North Indians and reaped a rich political dividend out of it. The decent performance of the MNS in the recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly elections could bring out more Chauhans.
The response of political establishment, civil society groups and law and order machinery to such divisive agendas has been pathetic to say the least. We as individuals have failed in standing up to such leaders who are still pursuing the British policy of divide and rule.
The hate campaign is a mix of several factors which includes urban immigration, poverty, and lack of governance, the law, citizenship and parochialism.
How is it that political thugs just stand up and make a mockery of the constitution and the federal structure of India? Why can’t they be nipped in the bud so that they don’t set an example for other leaders to indulge in such gimmicks?
First, let’s be very clear about one thing. Here we are not talking about just Biharis. They are not only Biharis rather they are poor. The taxiwallahs, small time shop owners become the soft targets since they don’t have money. They are just a tool in the hands of politicians sitting on both sides of the spectrum.
Big cities attract crowds no matter what you do. Whether it be Indians moving in India or going abroad. The lure of a better life is too tempting for people to move out of their native place. Nobody does it by choice. Big cities provide better opportunities and are getting thousands everyday. The lack of urban planning is indeed a genuine problem which deserves special attention. There is a shortage in water and electricity, over crowding of streets and garbage piling up. But alas, our leaders are too busy with their hate campaigns.
It’s painful moving out of your native place, away from your loved ones. A Bihari leaves Bihar with the only intention of seeking a decent life for themselves and their family. And that is the only reason for migration whether it is to Delhi, Mumbai, Bhopal or America, Australia and Britain.
The real problem is of uneven development. A strong political will is the need of the hour to take the states which are lagging behind along with the rest of India.
Bihar’s contribution in the Indian freedom struggle has been immense with outstanding leaders like Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, Sri Krishna Sinha, Dr.Anugrah Narayan Sinha, Brajkishore Prasad, Mulana Mazharul Haque, Jayaprakash Narayan, Satyendra Narayan Sinha and many others.
Bihar is one of the most sacred place for various religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and Islam.
Biharis have excelled in al walks of life and made India proud. There are innumerable Biharis who helped India register their presence globally. With a $104 million pay packet in 2008, mobile phone maker Motorola's Bihar-born chief Sanjay Jha has emerged America's top paid CEO.
And last but not the least, before abusing a Bihari, just spare a thought for Dr Rajendra Prasad.

Biharis are hard working, helping who offer hard work without demanding too much. They make our country competitive. Lazy people should be shot in the temple. History tells us we were always fighting among ourselves when it was urgent and imortant to fight other countries, people, arm twisting at world platforms. Every Indian deserves what he is capable of, irrespective of where it is in the country.

Pople ji, You have a crazy idea about shooting lazy people. If you have a good job and you can earn something for your kinds they are certainly going to be lazy, because your kinds are not fighting a survival battle (as you have earned something for them), like Bihari youths. You must be a contractor, who needs very cheap labourers. In reality, if Biharis go to other States to work, nobody can compete with them, because compared to local workforce they do not need to join the local festivals or do not need to spend for other misc. expences. These Biharis will rent a small room and 15 to 20 people will share the rent, and it is something the local people can not do. And most importantly when these people are fighting for survival due to the condition in Bihar, they will do anything to beat local candidates. If you think they are so hardworking and sincere people, then why they can not do anything in their own state ?

To the author: If Biharis are so great then why can't they take this challange to make their state as great as other states? Why intelligent Biharis do not want to start companies in your own state? Why do you want to blame Raj and people of Maharashtra as if Biharis own Maharashtra? You are using constitution to hide your own negatives. Why do you want to blame other states for your problems? Why can't you fight with your own leaders to make things better for your own people? Why don't you give some respect to your own poors, females in your own state? Why can't you improve law and order situation in your own land? Why can't you appreciate openness of Maharashtrians who accomodated thousands of Biharis till now? Thodi Krutadnyata dikhao. Will you accept poors from Maharashtra if your state shows some progress?

Great. This is called arrogance. Our house is now full with guests who want to become owners. Regarding your suggestion, Marathis here are making state and country better. If you want to read more, most of the social, economic progress started in this great state. Remember, Phule, Ambedkar for example. If yes, then have you heard of Karve who did work for women long back.

Dnyanesh saaheb, I differ with your definition of a beggar. As per me, beggars are those who want 'regional reservation'. I term it as reservation 'demanded' by mentally ratarded incompetent people who cant even compete with poor biharis. The mentally retarted adjective is truely justified as I see people questioning hindi as the national language. What next sir? You would want to propose a new national anthem .. written by some Baba Saaheb Godse?

Boss Jaat pe mat jaa, yeh jaat paat ke wajah se hi bihar is in such a pitiable condition. You people are trained to look at caste in everything. It is hindi chauvinism which is the main reason cow belt is so backward today. Biharis do well not because of hard work but simple manipulation. Bihar has maximum students but also the place where maximum paper leaks take place ..even railway board papers were leaked during Lalu's time. Secondly in Central Govt Jobs you will see only North Indians not because Maharashtrians are lacking merit but rather North Indians will only select fellow North Indians for the job posts. Asking for Job reservations for Maharashtrians is a way of making sure they do not face discrimination from North Indians. I am an IT engineer from Pune. A Bihari HR joined our company and would specifically recruit only North Indians eventually his Marathi boss who was a soft guy had to step in act tough to put a stop to this nonsense.

Deshpande saaheb, story telling anybody can do. Waise if you are learned as u claim to b, u should know that regionalism is appealing mostly to gooltis, tamils, bengalis and marathis. How else can u justify existence of shiv sena for decades..hope u hv not been laid off in these difficult time..all the best..i accept all what u say..biharis get into IIT by leaking question papers, they crack civil exams again similarly..but the otherwise better ghatis probably get rejected due to their looks or their accent.

CM Nitish Kumar has turned the worst tide in Bihar and has given hope to Bihar with a clean government so far. But whose family ruled Bihar for so long? It is none other than Laloo Yadav. He should take 80% of all the blame for the poor plight of Biharis. 20% of the blam should be on Bihar people for re-elcting him & his family for so many yaers. More corrupt Dravidian parties in Tamilnadu could at least keep law & ordr under control, which resulted in private investment. Laloo failed even on that front also.
